A group of teens pulled a passenger from a cab and assaulted him, then turned their wrath on the driver in Center City last night.

The Liberty Taxi cab was stopped at a red light at 15th and Chestnut streets with a male customer in the backseat when, around 8:23 p.m., a group of teens came up to the cab and started calling the customer racially derogatory names, police said. They threw an unknown liquid at the cab.

The teens opened the cab door, pulled out the passenger and began punching him. The cab driver, 53, jumped out and tried to intervene, at which point the teens punched him in the face, kicked him several times and threw liquid on him. The passenger fled.

The cab driver then pulled a tire iron from his trunk, scaring off the offenders, and flagged down a police officer, who arrested them after a brief foot pursuit.

The cab driver suffered an eye injury and abdominal pains, but said he would seek medical attention later. Three teenage males, two aged 17 and one aged 15, were arrested. They are charges with aggravated assault and related offenses.
