The Boston Calling block party series is set to kick off Thursday at Dewey Square in the Rose Kennedy Greenwaythis Thursday, organizers announced on their Facebook page.
This is the first year the free weekly series will be carried out in Dewey Square; the parties were previously held on Summer Street in Downtown Crossing. According to organizers, the outdoor events will include music by live local bands, cold beers, food trucks, a farmers market, “green grass [and] good times.”
Boston-based club band The Swinging Johnsons will open the series Thursday, and the summer lineup will be gradually unveiled at BostonCalling.com.
Brian Appel of Crashline Productions said organizers decided to move the series due to Summer Street construction, and Dewey Square offers a lot of space for the event.
“Bands will be varied, everything from cover bands, reggae bands, indie bands, etc. We are open to submissions as well from local bands via our Facebook page,” Appel said in an email.
The Thursday night concerts run between 5 p.m. and 8 p.m. through Sept. 25, weather permitting. Though the concerts are open to the public, guests must be at least 21 to attend.
The concert series coincides with Boston Calling’s spring and fall three-day music festivals, which will take place May 23 through May 25, and Sept. 5 through Sept. 7.
“We’re thrilled to be working with Boston Calling and the Downtown BID to bring the block party series to Dewey Square Park on the Greenway,” said Jesse Brackenbury, Executive Director of the Rose Kennedy Greenway Conservancy.
“Dewey Square is a social “hub,” a natural fit to host the block parties. It is one of the Greenway’s most popular mid-day destinations where professionals, locals and visitors come to enjoy fresh, local food from the Farmers’ Market and also hosts our largest selection of Mobile Eats vendors.”
