Theft of Hilltop Steak House memorabilia under investigation

With the announcement last week that the beloved Hilltop Steak House in Saugus closing, police say theft of items from the restaurant has skyrocketed.

Antique pots and plates, all emblazoned with the Hilltop logo, are disappearing from the restaurant and mysteriously showing up for sale on eBay. Police told WBZ that the plates are estimated to be $20 each and the pots are valued at $600 each.

A quick search on eBay to see what Hilltop items are for sale showed vintage stemmed cocktail glasses and china plates.

Police say they are working with restaurant management to identify the suspects, and prevent further thefts.

Upon announcing their closing, Hilltop released a statement to the town of Saugus explaining how the decision to close has been brought on by declining business.

“Over the past several years we have seen a dramatic change in the volume of our business. Tremendous efforts have been made over this period by our management and staff with the cooperation of the town to make improvements and overcome this decline,” the letter said. “However, the continued change in the demographics of our customerbase, increased competition and the increased cost to run this fabulous landmark has been too great to overcome.”

“In closing we would like to express our sincere gratitude to all the departments of the Town of Saugus and its wonderful residents for their supportand patronage over the last 52 years,” the letter added.
