More than 4,000 Boston students will receive donated backpacks and school supplies today at a massive TD Garden giveaway.

Mayor Thomas M. Menino is expected to join the afternoon event, which will also include education officials; Blades, the Boston Bruins mascot; Lucky, the Boston Celtics mascot; clowns from Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey; and more.

Garden Neighborhood Charities, the Salvation Army and the City of Boston teamed up last year for the inaugural Back-to-School Celebration. Organizers said that due to the tremendous impact this event had on the community in 2012, the three organizations decided to partner once again.

According to an organizers, Menino will be presented with the Mayor’s Champions Cup for his commitment to Boston’s youth academic and athletic programs and “encouraging generations of students to become lifelong champions on and off the field.”

The students were pre-registered at the Salvation Army.
