Traffic delays expected due to funerals for firefighters

Police are asking the public to be patient due to expected traffic delays on Wednesday and Thursday as a result of the funerals for the two Boston firefighters who tragically died in a Back Bay blaze last week.

Fire companies from Los Angeles toBaltimore,Maryland, are expected to attend the funeral mass forBoston Fire DepartmentLieutenantEdward Walsh on Wednesday, which will be held at St. Patrick's Church inWatertown, Reuters reports.

State Police say the areas of Exit 15 on Route 93 southbound is expected to be particularly slow-moving.

"Because of the large number of mourners from the public safety community who will be staging in South Boston Wednesday and Thursday for transport to the funerals of Boston Fire Lt. Edward J. Walsh Jr. and Firefighter Michael R. Kennedy, motorists should expect delays in the area of Exit 15 (Columbia Road)," State Police announced on Tuesday night.

Fire and police mourners will be transported via bus to the funeral services through the area starting at 6:30 a.m. The delays will occur throughout both Wednesday and Thursday mornings.

Drivers may wish to seek alternate routes on both days.

Walsh and Kennedy died Wednesday when they became trapped in the basement of 298 Beacon St. where a massive fire broke out, the Metro previously reported.Kennedy's funeral will followon ThursdayatHoly Name Church in Boston's West Roxbury neighborhood.
