Train like a Marine for 9/11 anniversary

10K races just not cutting it for you? Triathlons seem like a walk in the park?

Try training like a soldier in the U.S. military. The first-ever Civilian Military Combine will be held on Sept. 10, to commemorate the 10th anniversary of 9/11.

The race consists of a 7-mile mountain run through some of the highest peaks in the Pocono Mountains, followed by seven military obstacles.

Participants will pull their way through mud, scale 10-foot ladders, battle through icy cold chest-high river water and carry an as-of-yet-unrevealed object 1,000 feet along rocky and muddy terrain.

“Be prepared for pain,” race organizers warn. “This obstacle is cold, long and extremely draining.”

The structure of the race has been created and reviewed by conditioning coaches from the U.S. armed forces. Both men and women are encouraged to compete.

New York City army vets who served in Iraq and Afghanistan will be participating in the combine. The bulk of those participating are members of the Marine Corps, the Army and the NYPD and FDNY. There is also a civilian team running in memory of family members and friends who died in the World Trade Center attacks.
