The top two contenders in the race to replace current City Council Speaker Christine Quinn are also from Manhattan, according to multiple reports.

East Harlem Councilwoman Melissa Mark-Viverito, a progressive who endorsed Mayor-elect Bill de Blasio before any other councilmembers, and Upper East Side Councilman Dan Garodnick, a former securities attorney, are leading the race.

De Blasio has reportedly pushed for Mark-Viverito in calls to several council members this week, while Democratic outer-borough leaders reportedly believe they've secured the votes for Garodnick.

The race will be decided in January through a vote in council, which has 51 members.
