(UPDATE) Suspect turns self in for brutal West Philly hammer attack

UPDATE Tuesday, Feb. 25:

Police report that Nathanial Maybin, wanted in connection with a Feb. 20 assault, turned himself into police at the Southwest Detectives division with his attorney. Maybin faces attempted murder and aggravated assault charges.

ORIGINAL STORY:

A warrant is out for the arrest of Nathanial Maybin, 29, who is suspected of a brutal hammer attack that left a man hospitalized and still unable to speak days later.

David Woods, 46, was beaten just before 5 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 20 as he walked to his truck at 49th Street and Lancaster Avenue after withdrawing cash from an ATM.

A friend was in the truck and heard Woods fall, then saw him on the ground bleeding and a suspect standing over him holding a hammer.

Detectives met the victim on Sunday and while awake and alert he was unable to speak and is expected to require intensive speech therapy, according to police.
