An inmate was found dead inside the Nashua Street Jail on Sunday and authorities are conducting a death investigation.

A male detainee was found dead at the jail at about 2:30 a.m. Sunday, according to the Suffolk County sheriff’s office. The inmate’s name was not released, pending notification of his family.

The sheriff’s office said that an officer making routine rounds noticed the inmate asleep in an awkward position.

“Following an attempt to rouse the detainee, who at that time was unresponsive,an emergency medical response team was alerted and the officer began performing CPR until help arrived,” the sheriff’s office said in a statement.

Officials did not disclose how they believed the inmate died and an autopsy was planned to examine the cause and manner of death, according to the Suffolk district attorney’s office.

The Nashua Street Jail houses about 700 people, most of them awaiting trial, in 13 different housing units, according to the Suffolk County sheriff’s website.
