UPDATE: The woman hit by a taxi Tuesday morning in Midtown was a 23-year-old tourist visiting from England, according to NYPD reports.

Cops said she was staying at the Pennsylvania Hotel.

The woman was on the sidewalk with some friends when the taxi jumped the curb and hit her, police said.

None of her friends were injured, but the taxi severed her right leg below the knee, police said. She also suffered an injury to her left leg.

Cops said she was conscious when emergency personnel arrived on the scene.

Police confirmed that she is being treated at Bellevue Hospital. A law enforcement official said she is in surgery as doctors attempt to re-attach her leg.

A bicyclist was also hurt, though police said he only had a minor injury to his right knee.

Police said the cyclist told them he had tapped on the taxi to tell him to slow down, but the taxi sped up and swerved onto the sidewalk, hitting the woman.

Both the cyclist and the taxi cab driver passed breathalyzer tests, cops said. The taxi cab driver told police he lost control of the car.

Police confirmed that NBC's Dr. Oz came out of the building to help adjust a tourniquet good Samaritans had fashioned for the victim's leg using a belt.

The taxi driver received a summons for being an unauthorized driver, and the owner of the taxi also received an unauthorized driver summons as well as a summons for displaying incorrect information regarding rates.

Metro's original story is below.
