Humpback whales have been spotted just off the Queens shoreline in recent weeks.
Mike Leonard, his brother and father captured a dramatic video of one of the whales breaching just feet away from them while boating in the Rockaways.
“It was one of the most amazing things I’ve ever seen in life. It was pretty cool actually,” Leonard told CBS News.
“The big 40-footer went underneath our boat, and our boat rocked a little bit,” he said.
Caterina Panzeca, a marine environmental scientist, told CBS that the whales are swimming south, possibly from the Gulf of Maine, on their way to the Caribbean. They may stay for a few more days as long as there is food, she said.
