Philadephia police have released surveillance video that shows a man they say struck a 63-year-old woman in the head with a hammer while attempting to rape her in her Rhawnhurst home.

The crime occurred just after midnight on April 11.

The suspect broke into the victim's Loretto Avenue home and began sexually assaulting her, police said. When the woman resisted, the suspect struck her in the head several times with a hammer.


Police describe the suspect as a Hispanic male who is about 20 years old, 5-feet-7 and of an average build. He had his hair in a long, thick ponytail.

The suspect was wearing an Atlanta Braves baseball cap, faded blue jeans and a black hoodie.
