A surveillance camera at the Kendall/MIT Station in Cambridge last night captured a woman holding her 4-year-old son booking it toward the T tracks, falling in the pit, and quickly being helped by a bystander.
The woman and child, who were not identified, had to be helped from the train tracks after she tried to tried to catch a northbound train from the southbound tracks.
The incident happened at around 6 p.m. Both the woman and her child were not visibly injured, however they were taken to Massachusetts General Hospital for evaluation.
According to a T spokesman, the Attleboro woman told an MBTA Red Line inspector that she had seen a train “berthed on the northbound platform and believed she could board it (from the south bound side).”
“The bystander’s quick response is worthy of praise, but it’s also important that the public remember that the subway’s third rail is electrified,” said MBTA Spokesman Joe Pesaturo. “It’s always best to immediately notify an MBTA employee so that we can alert nearby train crews and shut off the power to the third rail as soon as possible.”
Around the 30-second mark, the woman is seen dashing for the train, then abruptly landing with her child on the tracks. A man quickly jumps in to help the pair.
