Subway riders were screaming, crying and practically begging for mercy after a rat got trapped in their car.
YouTube user Jinais Ponnampadikkal Kader posted a video of the ride from hell, writing:
"A usually boring Monday morning commute to work at Brooklyn was stirred up by this little guy.H e joined us at the Fulton street station on the A train going downtown. Someone getting off the train was screaming 'RAT on the train!' But by the time everyone realized what was happening, the doors closed and the train entered the tunnel. We were stuck with him till the other end."
Riders, unsurprisingly, were terrified. In the video, one rider screams, "Shut up!" and plenty of people are weeping and bawling amidst the chaos - a few also laugh.
Spokesperson Kevin Ortiz said the MTA is taking steps to reduce the number of rats crawling around the subway system.
"We have increased the frequency of baiting inside 277 stations- those are basically our underground stations - and increased the budget," he said. "The other thing we've done is embarked on a project to seal the refuse rooms that hold trash for collection ... Rats go or navigate toward where there's food, so that's another program we have in place."
Ortiz said the MTA is also conducting research with firm SenesTech and testing a product that sterilizes male and female rats.
His tip for MTA riders who encounter rats? "Avoid them," he said. That sounds like good advice to us.
