U.S. Rep. Gabby Giffords announced today will resign from the House of Representatives, a year after she miraculously survived a gunshot to the head.
In a video posted online, Giffords announced that she would step down sometime this week.
She speaks in a halting voiceover about issues like creating jobs and helping veterans, saying, “We can do so much more by working together.”
“I don’t remember much from that horrible day, but I will never forget the trust you placed in me to be your voice,” she says.
She faced re-election this year.
Her colleague and close friend, New York Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand, issued a statement after Giffords announced her decision.
“Gabby made the right decision for her and her family, but this is just the beginning of the next chapter of her story,” she said. “I know that Gabby will find other ways to fulfill her calling of public service.”
