Weekend crime rundown: 10-year-old boy accidentally shoots himself at West Philly playground

Plus, a man was killed in Wynnefield Heights after a two-car shootout led to a fatal crash.

Nine people were injured – two of them fatally – in five shootings around the city this weekend.

A 38-year-old man was shot and killed on the 2000 block of Dennie Street in Nicetown shortly before 5:20 p.m. last night. According to investigators, officers found the victim lying unresponsive on the sidewalk with a gunshot wound to the chest. He died a short time later at Temple University Hospital. His identity has not yet been released.

Police are looking for a black male who fled the scene in a black, two-door pickup truck with a black plexiglass cap and a Pennsylvania tag.

Two men are recovering at Albert Einstein Medical Center after they were shot on the 5000 block of Germantown Avenue in East Germantown shortly before 10:15 p.m. last night.

Responding officers found the victims, aged 20 and 30, inside Indacut Barbershop at 5020 Germantown Avenue. Both had shotgun pellet wounds to their chest, hands and legs. Authorities said the men told police they were outside on the block talking when they heard a loud bang and realized they had been hit. Both men then ran into the barbershop to take cover. They said they did not see the shotgun-wielding suspect.

Two victims were shot early this morning on the same block where a man was killed last night. The victims, both males aged 16 and 22, told police that they were walking on the 2000 block of Dennie Street in Nicetown shortly after 1 a.m. when they heard three gunshots and ran inside a nearby home. The 16-year-old was shot in his upper thigh and the 22-year-old was shot in his foot. Both men are in stable condition at Temple University Hospital. The suspects are described as two black males wearing hoods.

A shootout between two cars in the Wynnefield Heights area led to a dramatic crash that killed one of the occupants. Police said that officers responded to 53rd Street and Parkside Avenue around 2:30 a.m. for reports of two vehicles exchanging gunfire. One of the cars sped into Fairmount Park and flipped over at Belmont Mansion and Chaminoux drives. The other car sped off.

Of the flipped car's four occupants, one man died of injuries sustained in the crash. Two men were taken to the University of Pennsylvania – one with a gunshot wound and one for injuries stemming from the auto accident. A fourth occupant fled on foot and has not yet been apprehended.

Police said that at this time, investigators do not believe that shootout was related to last Sunday's shooting of a 38-year-old man or Tuesday's shooting death of a 19-year-old woman, both on the 1700 block of North Aberdeen Street, about a block away from the intersection where the gunfire first rang out.

A 10-year-old boy accidentally shot himself in the hand this afternoon at the Christy Recreation Center playground near 56th and Christian streets in West Philadelphia.

Police said the child was apparently playing with a gun when it discharged at 3 p.m., striking him in the thumb. He was taken to the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, where he was treated and released. It is unclear how the boy got ahold of the weapon.
