Weekend crime rundown: Two people killed and three injured in shootings, stabbing
Two men were fatally shot in Frankford and Strawberry Mansion and a man allegedly assaulted his elderly mother in West Philadelphia.
Two people were killed and three people were injured in at least six violent incidents over the weekend.
A man, identified today as Jose Rodriguez, 52, of the 5200 block of Saul Street in Frankford, was found lying semi-conscious on the sidewalk near his home around 10:30 p.m. Friday night with multiple gunshot wounds to his chest and legs, investigators said. He was rushed into surgery at Temple University Hospital, where he died around 3:30 a.m. Saturday morning. No word yet on a suspect.
Police said that a 23-year-old man bleeding from the chest flagged down officers on the 2200 block of North 17th Street shortly before 1:15 a.m. Saturday morning, saying that he had been stabbed. Investigators saw the victim exiting the passenger side of a Nissan Maxima and drove him to Temple University Hospital. They said that the suspect is known, but police have been unable to interview the victim due to the severity of his injuries. He is currently in critical condition.
There were no injuries reported when a man robbed a Rite Aid pharmacy at gunpoint on the 12300 block of Academy Road in Northeast Philadelphia Saturday morning. Police said that an unknown man armed with a black revolver stole various medications around 6 a.m. and fled on foot east on Byberry Road. He is described as a five-foot-ten to six-foot-tall white male wearing a red baseball cap, blue fleece jacket, black sneakers, black gloves and a white scarf around his face.
Police said a 55-year-old man assaulted his elderly mother early this morning in West Philadelphia. The victim, 88, was taken to the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania around 2:30 a.m. with a cut to her head. The suspect fled the home on foot, police said.
A 23-year-old man was shot and killed this afternoon in Strawberry Mansion. Police said the victim was shot multiple times in the stomach and chest by a black male riding a bicycle on the 3200 block of West Arizona Street shortly before 1:45 p.m. He was rushed to Temple University Hospital in critical condition, but soon died. According to investigators, the gunman was last seen near 32nd and Cumberland streets and was wearing a red hoodie, but is believed to have taken it off and is likely clothed in a gray t-shirt. The victim's identity has not yet been released.
Another man was injured during a second shooting in the same neighborhood about three hours later and two blocks away. The victim, 19, is hospitalized in stable condition after he was shot in the hip shortly before 5 p.m. at 30th and Cumberland streets.
No arrests have yet been made in any of this weekend's incidents.
