A day care worker in West Philadelphia has been charged with abusing and abandoning two children Sunday morning.

The woman, identified as 57-year-old Genel James, allegedly pushed an 11-year-old girl and hit the girl's 2-year-old brother in the face about 10 a.m. inside the Future People Day Care Center at 57th and Ludlow streets, NBC10 reports. She then allegedly left the facility, locking the two children inside.

The girl called Philadelphia police from a phone inside the day care center.

NBC10 found that Future People is up to date on all licenses and permits, and the day care center's owner indicated the worker had passed all background checks.

James has been charged with child endangerment and assault. She was arraigned early this morning, and is being held on $100,000 bail.

The owner of Future People indicated she would be firing James for her alleged actions.
