Come one, come all. The Health Department yesterday asked New Yorkers to submit their ideas for designing a new NYC Condom. The winning design will be printed on hundreds of thousands of condom wrappers given away free.
“The idea is to keep condoms in their face,” said Dr. Monica Sweeney of the agency’s Bureau of HIV/AIDS. “I want to change the way people think about sex and condoms, and I want New York City to be the safest city in the world to have sex,” she said.
That might require taking some unusual steps, but Dr. Sweeney is willing to do almost anything, including singing “Sex fits condoms, like condoms fit sex” — a jingle-like tune — to a reporter.
“Somebody asked me for a condom that only goes half way down for oral sex,” she said. “We listen to what the public wants. If they want something and it’s out there — I’ll go find it.”
The new condoms debut next fall and will be available free at bars, gyms, restaurants, clubs, coffee houses, clinics and community centers around the city.
