Whitney Houston’s first single recorded in Philadelphia

By now, news of Whitney Houston’s death at the age of 48 has reverberated across the Internet.

But what a lot of people don’t know is that she recorded her first single, “Hold Me,” in Philadelphia in 1984 as a duet with the city’s already-legendary Teddy Pendergrass. She was 20.

Both artists released the song as a single off their respective albums, Pendergrass’s “Love Language” and Houston’s self-titled debut. Though it was during the later part of Pendergrass’s career, Houston was unknown at the time, and the pop ballad helped launch her to stardom.
