Winchester man arraigned, confesses on camera to killing his mom

The man accused of bludgeoning his mother to death with a rubber mallet inside a Winchester apartment complex confessed to the murder while being led into a police station earlier this week.

Matthew McAveeney, 46, is alleged to have killed his mother, Barbara, inside her Swanton Street home before fleeing the state. His mother’s body was discovered by police during a well-being check on October 14.

McAveeney went on the lam, prompting local authorities to release photos and community bulletins about his mother’s murder. He was arrested in North Carolina last week. Last night, as he was being taken into Winchester police headquarters he apologized to his mother, family and pets before telling the scrum of reporters gathered, “I murdered my mother.”

He was arraigned in Woburn this morning on charges ofarmed assault with intent to murder​,assault and battery by means of a dangerous weapon resulting in serious bodily injury, assault and battery by means of a dangerous weapon on a person 60 years or older and assault and battery and two counts of cruelty to animals.
