Police yesterday were searching for the driver of a motorcycle that struck a young woman as she tried to cross Commonwealth Avenue on Sunday night.
The woman, who police only identified as being in her early 20s, was hit just before 8 p.m. near 755 Commonwealth Ave., and Boston University’s Marsh Plaza. It was not clear if the woman was a student at the university, and a university spokesman said he was not aware of the identity of the woman.
The woman was injured, but her injuries were not considered life-threatening. She was taken to Brigham and Women’s Hospital.
Witnesses told police that the woman was in a crosswalk when she was hit. Witnesses described the motorcycle as black. While the driver fled, pieces of the motorcycle were left behind at the scene, according to Officer James Kenneally, a Boston police spokesman.
“Police are looking for additional help. As such, anyone that has information about the location or identification of the operator — certainly that information would be most appreciated,” Kenneally said.
The crossing is a busy intersection on any day. Commonwealth Avenue carries two lanes of traffic on each side along that stretch, which also runs along a major portion of Boston University’s campus. Yesterday, scores of new and returning students and young people crossed with and against walk signs.
Colin Riley, a BU spokesman, said the university always warns and reminds students that they are attending school on an urban campus and to use caution.
