A young person walking could beat the M42 cross-town bus, which creeps along 42nd Street at about 3.6 miles per hour, according to a report released yesterday by the Straphanger’s Campaign.

Its snail-slow pace won the M42 the Straphanger’s undesirable 2010 “Pokey” award as the slowest bus in the city. Gene Russianoff of the Straphangers Campaign said it was so slow, “an actor could learn the part of Hamlet in the time it takes to go from the U.N. to Times Square.”

The MTA is trying to increase bus lanes and select service to increase speed, said an MTA spokesman.
