Great news, G-train riders!
The MTA is expected to spend millions of dollars revamping transit services across the five boroughs, including a permanent expansion of the G train to Church Avenue.
“It’s hard to remember the last time we had good news about transit in Brooklyn,” said Public Advocate Bill de Blasio. “Our message to the MTA was simple: if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. It looks like we’ve been heard.”
Two MTA board members today confirmed a Daily News report today that the MTA has decided to make permanent the G train expansion into South Brooklyn.
Three years ago the MTA added five temporary stops to the G train — Fourth Avenue-Ninth Street, Seventh Avenue, 15th Street-Prospect Park, Fort Hamilton Parkway, and Church Avenue. With the work due to be finished by the end of this year or next year, community members and public officials have been pressuring the MTA to make the stops permanent since April.
While MTA officials would neither confirm nor deny that any of these changes would take place, NYC Transit Ridership Council chair and MTA board member Andrew Albert was confident the G to Church Avenue is here to stay.
“We’re reasonably hopeful that this will happen,” he told Metro. “With the explosion of growth in Williamsburg and Greenpoint it makes a lot of sense.”
Both board members added they wouldn’t know anything for certain until next week, when MTA Chairman Joseph Lhota and transit executives are rumored to unveil a plan to the MTA board.
