Long Beach councilmen accused of double-dipping

Two Long Beach council members have been caught double dipping, said law enforcement officials — and not in the Atlantic Ocean.

Long Beach City Councilman Michael Fagen allegedly supplemented his $19,000-a-year salary by collecting eight months of unemployment checks from January to August 2010, according to the New?York Post. Fagen is required to report his part-time Council job to the state Labor Department.

City Manager Charles Theofan reported Fagen to Labor Department investigators, who then reported him to the Nassau County district attorney, which is now investigating Fagen.

Meanwhile, fellow Council member John C. McLaughlin, a retired New York City Fire Department lieutenant, regularly ran marathons and triathlons — all while collecting $86,000 a year, tax free, in disability benefits, since he retired from the FDNY in 2001 as an asthmatic.
