LRT extension to open Saturday

Southside commuters who use public transportation will be rolling this weekend as the south LRT extension will officially open for business.

Construction of the south extension to Southgate and Century Park is finished and everyone is invited to the grand openings on Saturday morning.

“This is all about Edmonton trying to create a more compact urban form,” said Graeme McElheran, communications officer with the City of Edmonton. “Bringing more people into central locations and having access to the entire city through an efficient mass-transit system.

The LRT certainly helps achieve that goal.”

Opening ceremonies start at 10 a.m. at Southgate, followed by displays, presentations and a tour. The party starts half an hour later at Century Park and will include activities for kids, a mini farmer’s market, entertainment and special guests.

Construction of the two terminals started in the summer of 2007.

“The process for this project was extremely smooth,” McElheran said. “Everything happened on time and on budget, thankfully.”

Regular service on the new line will start on Sunday.
