Macy’s ready to up its cool cred

When going the department store route, you head to Barneys New York for cutting-edge fashion and to Macy’s when you’re shopping with mom. But the 150-year-old department store, known more for its Thanksgiving Day Parade than its clothes, is about to change all of that. This spring, Macy’s will collaborate with in-demand designers such as London’s Kinder Aggugini — known for his punk-rock aesthetic and sharp tailoring — for its contemporary line, Impulse.

Women’s Wear Daily even reports that a collection with Karl Lagerfeld is in the works. And they just launched a new in-house brand, bar III, targeting a younger fashion-conscious customer. At a preview of the collection, which took place at the New Museum, looks from the affordable line were styled by fashion bloggers such as Rumi Neely of Fashion Toast and Jane Aldridge of Sea of Shoes. And to certify their downtown cred, Macy’s is well, heading downtown. The department store will throw a peace sign up at Herald Square (though temporarily) and debut bar III at a pop-up shop in the Flatiron District.
