Mark Madoff, the elder son of disgraced financier Bernard Madoff, was found dead Saturday of an apparent suicide on the second anniversary of his father’s arrest. He was found hanged with a dog leash, slung over a living-room ceiling pipe.
The victim, at age 46, killed himself as his 2-year-old son, Nick, slept in an adjacent bedroom.
No suicide note was found — but according to police, e-mails to Stephanie Morgan, Bernard Madoff’s wife, read in part, “Please send someone to take care of Nick” and “I love you.” He also sent an e-mail to his attorney, Martin Flumenbaum. According to police it read, “Nobody wants to believe the truth. Please take care of my family.”
In recent months, federal prosecutors have increased their scrutiny of Bernard Madoff’s brother and sons, who thus far have not been charged with any offenses. The sons, Mark and Andrew, went to authorities two years ago with the revelation their father had confessed to them about the Ponzi scheme.
