Making consensual polygamy illegal infringes on civil rights

I’m not a polygamist. Frankly, one wife is more than enough for me. But I don’t think it should be illegal.

It’s a way of living that goes against our country’s dominant religious moral beliefs, but that’s no reason to make it illegal. Hopefully, that law will go out the door like so many other antiquated laws that go against our civil rights, like the now abolished laws against interracial marriage in the United States, or the continuing debate against gay marriage.

It’s true that some polygamous relationships have been abusive, but so are quite a few monogamous relationships. We already have laws, help lines and services to deal with these horrible situations.

I don’t see what making consensual polygamy illegal does, other than infringe on people’s civil rights to live their lives according to their religious or cultural beliefs.
