Man allegedly stole mail in seven Mass. towns

A resident of Scituate was arraigned Wednesday, pleading not guilty to receiving stolen property, but more federal charges may follow after the case is reviewed by a postal inspector.

Ryan E. Hudson was stopped by Taunton police Tuesday after they received calls of a suspicious vehicle in the area, WCVB reported. Once pulled over, police found a large amount of mail addressed to other people from across the region.

Inside a large nylon laundry bag, which Hudson claimed was full of dirty laundry, police found letters and packages addressed to residents of East Taunton, Falmouth, Mashpee, Marston Mills, Cotuit, Wareham and Sagamore Beach, the Tuanton Gazette stated.

Police also found 14 debit or credit cards belonging to other people, 13 gift cards also belonging to others, six women’s wallets, four personal checks made out to him for amounts up to $1,520, earrings, a computer mouse and a DVD movie, WCVB elaborated.

When asked by police about their findings, Hudson allegedly responded, “What’s the big deal?” the Gazette added.

Defense attorney Alfred Davis Puller stated that Hudson had a minimal criminal record and had recently been recovering from opiate abuse, WCVB added.

The prosecution said the case is currently under investigation by a U.S. postal inspector to determine if federal charges are warranted, according to the Gazette, which added that Hudson’s pretrial hearing is scheduled for Feb. 4.
