Man arrested over racist graffiti incident

An 18-year-old man has been arrested and Mounties have recommended mischief charges in relation to the racist graffiti found at Empire Centre in Richmond.

Two men were caught on camera on Wednesday defacing the stairwell of the Empire Centre parkade with swastikas and racist remarks against Chinese people.

“This person is just sick,” said NDP safety critic Mike Farnworth. “We need to ensure we have programs to combat racism. We need to take this seriously.”

The men returned on Thursday to smash the security cameras. They added more hate comments to the stairwell as well as the men’s washroom, said storeowner Nelson Cheung.

“It’s ridiculous how much they are against the Chinese,” he said.

RCMP said they are still trying to identify other men involved. The suspect will make his first court appearance on Sept. 14.
