Man charged in attack on RCMP officer

A man who allegedly ambushed an RCMP officer, stabbing him repeatedly in an interview room at the headquarters of Alberta’s police investigative unit, is facing a variety of charges including attempted murder.

Lee Christopher Monrose, 29, was also charged yesterday with aggravated assault, three counts of assaulting a police officer, assault causing bodily harm and assault with a weapon.

Sgt. Andrew Johnson was critically injured after Monrose showed up unexpectedly Tuesday morning at the Calgary offices of the Alberta Serious Incident Response Team, said Edmonton police Staff Sgt. Lorne Pubantz.

Calgary police Chief Rick Hansen said yesterday he is not second- guessing the actions of ASIRT and will wait to review Calgary police procedures at the conclusion of the current investigation.

Monrose was involved with ASIRT because he had been shot in the head by Calgary police last November.
