Man fatally shot in downtown Boston (UPDATED)

Authorities now believe the person who fatally shot a man in downtown Boston early Sunday did so in self defense.

A preliminary investigation has revealed that members of two groups became involved in a verbal fight that led to shots being fired by two people, Boston police and Suffolk District Attorney Daniel Conley said today.

One of those people is the man who died, authorities said.

Dumayne Chin, 25, of Boston, was found shot at Atlantic Avenue and High Street about 2:20 a.m. Sunday. He later died at Tufts Medical Center.

The man who shot him is a 33-year-old with a registered gun and a license to carry it, authorities said, adding that the unidentified man has cooperated with police and has surrendered his gun.

“At this point in the investigation, it appears he may have acted in self-defense and he has not been charged at this time,” police and prosecutors said in a statement.

Detectives have interviewed multiple witnesses and prosecutors will conduct a grand jury investigation into the death.
