A 41-year-old man was in Dartmouth provincial court Tuesday facing several charges including unlawful confinement, after Halifax RCMP responded to a residence on Old Sackville Road Monday night where it was reported a woman had been held against her will.
Police say the female was let go by the male resident around 9:20 p.m. and she went to a neighbour’s house to call the RCMP. Police say she told them the man was still in the residence armed with a firearm. When they arrived at the scene, the 41-year-old man called out to police and surrendered without incident.
Police say a search of the residence found a .32-caliber lever-action rifle and a box of bullet shells in the basement.
“There was a loaded firearm when the incident was taking place,” said RCMP spokesman Cpl. Joe Taplin. “We believe alcohol was also possibly involved.”
Gerald Johnson made a brief appearance in court yesterday charged with assault, uttering threats, unsafe storage of a firearm, unlawful confinement and mischief. He was released on his own reconnaissance and is due back in Dartmouth court for election and plea August 26.
