A wistful 58-year-old English professor posted a missed connection on Craigslist after 40 years. The 1973 encounter sounds like something straight out of a movie: The poster met a woman in Grand Central Station and was struck by her appearance. “You had the blondest hair I had ever seen, and a plaid dress. I had never seen a plaid dress before,” he wrote. The young student wrote that he doesn’t know how he mustered up the courage to approach her, but he did and he asked her if she was lost. The two were meant to go home for Thanksgiving that night, but instead they ended up missing their bus and train, much to the chagrin of their families.
The man reminisced about that rainy day in New York, beers at a cheap bar and his Lower East Side dorm room. He also added that aside from a letter with no return address, he never heard from her again after the night they spent together.
The man wrote that he has been married twice and is a proud father, but he still thinks about that rainy day before Thanksgiving. “My life has known its share of triumphs and heartaches, of love and loss,” he wrote. “Against my better judgement, I haven’t forgotten that day – and, at least once a year, while mowing the lawn, or reading a newspaper, the details come back to me.”
Why is he writing to her now? “I know that there is nothing more exciting yet rare in life than making a true connection with someone. I have always been too sentimental for my own good, but in all honesty, I have never felt more at ease with anyone than I did laughing and talking to you that dimly lit midtown bar,” he wrote.
After the post went viral on Reddit, the man took it down from Craigslist, but we hope he finds his mystery woman again.
