Man sets new Grind record

A West Vancouver man has set a new record on the Grouse Grind, hiking the grueling trail’s 2,830 stairs in 25 minutes and 25 seconds.

Sebastian Selas, 22, beat his nearest competitor and former record-holder Michael Simpson by almost two minutes yesterday at the 19th annual BMO Grouse Grind Mountain Run.

Simpson previously held the record of 26 minutes and 19 seconds, which he set in 2007.

“I have been doing some altitude training in South America this summer and this is an amazing achievement for me,” said Selas.

More than 500 hikers competed in the event, which raised money for the Adopt an Athlete program, a local initiative committed to raising $50,000 for three athletes competing in the 2010 Olympic Winter Games.
