A homeless man who fled a local hospital in a stolen ambulance later crashed the vehicle into a police cruiser, authorities said Tuesday.

The “mentally disturbed” man, who was known to police, was being treated at an undisclosed hospital when he suddenly hopped into a Pro Ambulance parked outside and drove away, Cambridge police spokesperson Jeremy Warnicktold Boston.com.

Police eventually caught up with him near Third and Gore streets, where he crashed into the cruiser of a responding officer. Neither the officer nor the suspect was injured, Fox 25 reported.

The driver, Everett Goss, 48, of Cambridge, was charged with larceny of a motor vehicle and operating without a license.

He remained in police custody Tuesday night.
