Newton police are searching for a man who allegedly took an elderly woman from a nursing home on Tuesday, and now authorities have issued a warrant for suspected assault and battery.

Police alleged that David Collignon left the CareOne center in Newton around 2 p.m. on Tuesday with Beth Birnbaum, a resident at the facility and an acquaintance of Collignon’s, WHDH reported. Birnbaum was not allowed to sign herself out, and no one else signed her out.

“We also know that someone who has been coming to visit her was seen leaving the facility with her belongings and clothing,” Newton Police Lt. Bruce Apotheker was quoted by CBS Boston.

Ross Collignon, the suspect’s brother, said that Birnbaum wanted to leave the nursing home and that it was not a kidnapping, according to WCVB.

“There was a lot of problems with the care that was going on at the facility. There were drugs being administered that she did not want. She basically wanted to get out, leave, which was denied,” Ross Collignon was quoted by CBS Boston. He had been with his brother and Birnbaum earlier at the facility but claimed not to know where they were headed.

Authorities issued the warrant for David Collignon for assault and battery on a disabled person, not kidnapping, WHDH stated, adding that the suspect was last seen driving a gray 2015 Honda Fit with Massachusetts license plate 744 YR1.

“We’re concerned for her safety. We’re concerned for her medical needs,” Lt. Bruce Apotheker told WCVB. “We’re told if she doesn’t get medication and services she needs, it could be dire.”

Ross Collignon stated that his brother has the medications and medical supplies that Birnbaum needs, according to CBS Boston.
