Man with knife chases C-Train operator on downtown platform

A Calgary Transit C-Train driver was forced to flee a knife-wielding man early Monday morning at a downtown platform.

Police have arrested a suspect in connection with the bizarre incident, which began at 1:25 a.m. at the 4th Street SW station when someone apparently pushed the emergency button by accident.

The C-Train operator exited his cab to deactivate the button, and he was chased back to his cab by a man from the centre car, according to police.

“It’s disturbing that (this) occurs in our city, and it’s something the Calgary Police Service takes very seriously,” Insp. Kevan Stuart said, adding police are trying to determine a motive.

Police found the suspect walking along the 6th Avenue platform, where he allegedly began waving a knife around in a “threatening manner” towards police and a Taser was deployed.

Brian Whitelaw, Calgary Transit co-ordinator of safety, said the incident will be reviewed but they are relying on the police investigation to shed more light on the incident.

Police have charged John Richard Marleau, 22, with three counts of assault with a weapon and one count each of possession of weapon, carrying a concealed weapon and causing a disturbance.
