Mandate expands direction of cancer-fundraising dollars

This June, participants in Ottawa’s fifth annual Weekend to End Breast Cancer can make an even bigger difference with their fundraising.

While funds used to be automatically designated to the fight against breast cancer, participants now have the option to direct their dollars to fighting ovarian, cervical or uterine cancers.

Organizers also recently announced a one-day event to take place alongside the regular two-day event, which will be held June 5-7, will see thousands of people walking 30 or 60 kilometres.

Funds raised will go directly into local research initiatives to find better ways to treat cancer.

“This event has been incredibly successful and we now want to broaden its scope and increase participation to make an even bigger impact and affect more lives,” president and CEO of the Ottawa Regional Cancer Foundation Linda Eagen said in a release.

Because research shows the link between breast cancer and other gynecological cancers, the head of Surgical Oncology and director of Gynecological Oncology at the University of Ottawa/Ottawa Hospital, Dr. Michael Fung Kee Fung, said he is “thrilled” to see the expanded mandate.
