Man’s condition stable after RCMP shooting

A 34-year-old Gibsons man remained in serious but stable condition yesterday after Mounties shot him twice when he allegedly came at them with a claw hammer.

RCMP in the Sunshine Coast community met with the man and his father Friday night at the request of the Langley detachment for alleged threats made on a popular social networking site.

After speaking with the man for about 20 minutes, he grabbed a hammer, raised it above his head and moved toward the police, according to RCMP.

One officer shot the man, striking him twice in his lower body. He was rushed to hospital, stabilized and airlifted to the Lower Mainland where he underwent surgery.

Police did not name the man, but Global TV identified him as Leonard Kirkham.

RCMP spokesman Sgt. Peter Thiessen said the shooting is being investigated by the Lower Mainland’s Integrated Homicide Investigation Team.

The Commission for Public Complaints against the RCMP has been told of the incident.
