Many questions in gruesome discovery

In a macabre and freakish discovery, two skulls were found in a box outside of a Mission Hill apartment building yesterday.

Police forensic investigators and detectives responded to the buildings at 760 and 762 Huntington Ave. about 1 p.m. It was initially reported by police that construction workers found the skulls in the basement of a building.

Police were not able to say for sure yesterday whether the skulls were human as they were still being tested by the medical examiner’s office.

It was also still unclear as of last evening whether a crime had occurred.

Curious residents driving or walking by stopped to ask what was happening as detectives and officers stood near yellow police tape blocking a rear alleyway leading to a Dumpster, which was later towed away.

The news of the discovery didn’t seem to frighten people who live or work in the neighborhood, who could only guess as to where the skulls might have come from.

“I thought it was a hoax,” said Stephen, who declined to give his last name while sitting inside the nearby Stylz by DaBarba shop.

“I thought they were from one of the medical schools,” said barber Jamal Winn, who shrugged when asked if the discovery frightened him.

The area is largely populated with students and professionals, some working at the many nearby hospitals.
