A Maple Leafs fan at Air Canada Centre in Toronto brought a sign to Game 3 of the Bruins-Leafs playoff series that read, “Toronto Stronger,’ openly mocking the phrase ‘Boston Strong,’ which recently became a slogan in support of the City of Boston in the wake of the Marathon bombings in April.
#Torontostronger was also trending on Twitter at one point during Monday night’s Game 3.
United States and Canadian hockey fans have often had a vocal border battle, as was evidenced in 2004 when Montreal Canadiens fans booed the U.S. National Anthem in a series against the Bruins. Boston fans responded by cheering the Canadian National Anthem in the next home game of the series.
