March being held in support of Lisa Reimer

A walk is being held in Vancouver today in support of a lesbian teacher who claims she was fired because parents complained after her partner had a baby.

March organizer David Butler, who is gay and a teacher, says he believes Lisa Reimer is victim of homophobia.

“Homophobia gets transmitted to students via religious schools, and I do not think public money should be supporting this form of education,” Butler said.

Officials at Little Flower Academy have denied firing Reimer. They said she’s being paid up to the end of her contract and that Reimer is grading students’ work at home. The reason for her absence, the school administration says, is a “personal leave.”

Butler said he anticipates today’s demonstration will draw 50 to 150 people.

He added that religious schools in Canada are not held accountable for educating students about homophobia.

The march begins at Granville Street and King Edward Avenue at 4 p.m.
