Market offers the greatest show in town

All summer long, a group of Ottawa-based stunt artists will be wowing crowds in the new pedestrian area of the ByWard Market.

If you haven’t seen them yet, it’s probably because a crowd of at least half a dozen people deep forms around them each time they pull out the pogo sticks.

Through September at York and William streets and at the Ottawa International Buskers Festival starting next week, Stunt Double Circus — featuring members Paul Perreault, 25, Joey Albert, 22, Nick McClintock, 23 and Fred Grzybowski, 21 — will entertain residents and tourists with their pogo stick stunts, artistic juggling routines and more.

The group also has a high-flying Russian bar routine, where a performer is launched 20 feet in the air and caught on a four-inch wide bar, and a cyr wheel routine, where a performer spins inside a giant hoop.

The members — some of whom are National Circus School graduates taught by instructors with the Cirque du Soleil — train up to 45 hours a week on top of doing five to six shows a day.
