Federal authorities arrested a fugitive hiding out in Queens after he shot at U.S. Marshals and officers with the New York City Police Department.
Oswald Alexander Lewis, Jr., 44, is in custody Wednesday afternoon after a confrontation with arresting officers who found the suspect in a Springfield Gardens home near the intersection of 175th Street and 144th Drive.
Local officers joined the Marshals when they busted in on Lewis at around 11 p.m. Tuesday. On the run for possession, smuggling and distribution of cocaine charges from 1991, Lewis refused to step out of the house after arresting offers broke down his door.
Cops said Lewis had apparently went to sleep with a bulletproof vest and two handguns at his side. After he set off a few rounds, the cops fired back and injured Lewis’ hand.
In a failed attempt to escape, Lewis dove out the back door towards the backyard where he was met by NYPD offers. He ran back inside and began shooting again until he emptied out both guns.
Trapped and injured, officials said he threw both guns to the ground and soon surrendered.
No authorities were injured in the violent arrest, but Lewis was taken to Jamaica Hospital for treatment.
Tuesday night’s arrest is these second recent joint operation between Marshals and NYPD to end in a shootout. In late July, two Marshals and a detective were hospitalized when they approached a fugitive in a West Village smoke shop who died in the crossfire.
