Martha’s on the market: Captain’s Cottages now on sale

Harbor View Collins Cottage

Few look forward to going to work each morning like Leslie Cooper Floyd does. As the director of sales for the Harbor View Captain’s Cottages in Edgartown, one of Martha’s Vineyard’s storied escapes, Floyd’s desk is in one of the cottages that make up the Harbor View Hotel and Resort’s residential development. With a sea grass lined beach and small harbor just yards away, and set among shady tress and gentle landscaping, Floyd’s is one of the nicest offices, in one of the most picturesque and peaceful settings.

“I can’t wait to get to work each morning,” Floyd giggles. “It’s such a wonderful atmosphere. It feels part of the neighborhood rather than a resort.”

Indeed, set behind white picket fencing, off a red brick path that leads from the hotel, the cottages were moved from other parts of the island. One winter in the early 1900s, one cottage slid across the iced-over water from Katama. Another was previously a train station building, a remnant of the island’s defunct railway. Originally, they provided housing for hotel workers, but so many guests wanted to rent them that they were eventually turned into additional lodging.

Under the hotel’s new ownership, all five cottages were redeveloped in 2007-2008 to create 18 condos. So why are they only now coming on the market? Hello, financial crash! They remained part of the hotel until the market picked up. Already, three homes have sold.

“The first one I sold was my original office,” says Floyd. “If I keep doing my job right, I will put myself out of an office.”
