Martin undefeated at National curling after 8-7 win over King in Draw 5

DAWSON CREEK, B.C. – Edmonton’s Kevin Martin stayed undefeated at the Pomeroy Inn & Suites National curling event with a 8-7 extra end win over Jamie King on Thursday in Draw 5.

The Olympic gold medallist moved to 3-0 to lead Pool B in the third leg of the men’s Capital One Grand Slam of Curling.

Also in Draw 5, Brock Virtue (2-1) of Calgary was a 7-1 winner over Norway’s Thomas Ulsrud (2-1); Edmonton’s Kevin Koe (1-2) lost 9-5 to Brent Pierce (1-2) of New Westminster, B.C.; Rob Rumfeldt of Guelph, Ont., was a 7-4 winner over Brad Gushue; and Winnipeg’s Jeff Stoughton (2-1) beat Steve Laycock 5-3.

Glenn Howard and Laycock picked up victories in Draw 4. Howard of Coldwater, Ont., edged St. John’s, N.L., skip Gushue (1-2) 6-5 in extra ends while Saskatoon’s Laycock doubled Calgary’s Steve Petryk 4-2.

Howard leads Pool C at 2-0 just ahead of Laycock 2-1.

In other Draw 4 results, Stoughton (1-1) beat Rob Rumfeldt (0-2) 7-3; and Jim Cotter (2-1) of Vernon, B.C., downed Winnipeg’s Mike McEwen (0-2) 6-3;
