Eight Massachusetts toll takers have been fired and 14 others punished in recent years, accused of short-changing drivers, state transportation officials said.
According to documents obtained by WBZ-TV, the Massachusetts Department of Transportation has received nearly 300 written complaints in the last three years from drivers who said they received the wrong change at toll booths.
MassDOT has refunded more than $3,200 to drivers since 2010, the year a surveillance program was launched to monitor toll collectors.
MassDOT administrator Frank DePaola told WBZ that out of the millions of annual transactions, only a small fraction result in mistakes. He called most toll collectors honest and hard-working.
“We don’t find it acceptable and when we have evidence of it happening, we will continue to take disciplinary action,” DePaola said.
