Police seized drugs, cash and a weapon in one of the largest-ever drug busts in the city yesterday. One man was arrested on drug and weapons related offences.

City cops executed one of their largest-ever drug busts in Calgary as they seized drugs, cash and a weapon in a raid on a northeast home.

District 5 police, pursuing a tip from the public, searched a residence in the 100 block of Whiteside Crescent N.E where they found a kilogram of heroin worth $193,000, 142 grams of cocaine, 400 ecstasy pills and 397 grams of marijuana. They also seized an automatic handgun and $17,000 in cash.

Staff Sgt. Steve Lorne of the CPS told reporters police knew it would be a big haul but they didn’t know it would be as huge as it was.

“Through information we received we did expect a large amount, but as much as we found was a bit of a surprise. It’s definitely a concern with the quantity of drugs we seized, which was one of the largest ever in the city,” he said.

Lorne said that while the suspect was known to police they do not believe the drugs were gang-related. They do believe, however, they may have been destined to be trafficked but are continuing to investigate.

District 5 police formed a drug offences team just over a month ago, and with the latest bust have now charged 17 people with 23 drug-related offences.

“Since their inception just over a month ago they have proven to be very effective. They are mandated to deal with drug issues and will make a huge impact.”

Police have charged 25-year-old Harsimran Singh Garewal of Calgary with nine drug and firearms related offences.
